You've already got solar. Is a home battery the next step?

If you already have solar panels, you’ve probably seen the benefits firsthand: lower electricity bills, less reliance on the grid and the satisfaction of generating your own energy.

But there’s a catch with solar that many homeowners discover over time.

Your solar panels generate energy during the day but your household doesn’t necessarily use it at the same time.

That’s where a home battery can make a big difference.

What's changed for solar-only homes?

When rooftop solar first became popular, feeding excess electricity back into the grid was an attractive part of the deal. Homeowners could export the electricity they weren’t using and receive a feed-in tariff as a credit on their electricity bill.

But feed-in tariffs have fallen significantly over the years. Today, the rate you receive for exporting solar is generally much lower than the price you pay when you buy electricity from the grid.

In simple terms, the value of using your solar yourself has become greater than the value of exporting it.

For a typical solar-only home, the middle of the day can look something like this:

Solar panels generate more electricity than the home needs → excess electricity is exported to the grid → you receive a relatively small feed-in credit.

And if your system reaches its export limit, some excess generation may even be curtailed rather than exported.

This is why more homeowners with existing solar are now looking at the next step: storing their excess solar energy instead of giving it back to the grid.

Panels produce energy. Batteries store energy.

Your solar panels are designed to produce electricity when the sun is shining. Your battery is designed to store that electricity so you can use it when you actually need it.

During the day, your solar can power your home first. Any additional energy can be stored in the battery.

Then, when the sun goes down, your battery can supply energy back to your home -reducing the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid.

Instead of: Generate → Export → Buy electricity later

You can move towards: Generate → Store → Use later

That simple shift can help you get more value from the solar system you already own.

Lower your reliance on expensive grid electricity

One of the biggest benefits of adding a battery is being able to use more of your own solar energy.

Without a battery, you may export excess electricity during the day and then purchase electricity from the grid in the evening when your solar panels aren't generating.

A battery allows you to move some of that daytime solar into the evening.

This can be particularly valuable if you’re on a time-of-use electricity plan, where electricity can cost more during peak periods.

The goal isn't necessarily to become completely independent from the grid. It's about buying less electricity when you don't need to.

More value from the solar you already have

Adding a battery doesn't mean replacing your existing solar system.

For many existing solar homes, a battery can be added to the system, commonly using an AC-coupled arrangement. Your installer can assess your existing panels, inverter, household consumption and electricity plan to determine the most suitable setup.

That means your original solar investment can continue doing what it does best - generating energy - while the battery adds another layer of flexibility by storing that energy for later.

Backup power when the grid goes down

There’s another benefit that has nothing to do with your electricity bill: energy security.

Most standard grid-connected solar-only systems will shut down during a power outage for safety reasons. So even if your panels are sitting in full sunshine, your home generally won't continue running on solar during a blackout.

A suitably configured battery system can provide backup power during an outage.

Depending on the system, it may be able to keep essential appliances such as lights, refrigeration and other selected circuits running. Some systems can be configured to disconnect from the grid and continue operating with solar and battery power.

For homeowners who have experienced blackouts, this can be one of the most compelling reasons to consider a battery.

Is a battery right for every solar home?

Not necessarily - and that's important.

A battery is a significant investment, so it should make sense for your household rather than simply being added because you already have solar.

The potential benefits depend on factors including how much electricity your home uses, when you use it, the size of your existing solar system, your electricity rates and the cost and size of the battery.

For example, a household that uses lots of electricity in the evening may have more opportunity to benefit from storing daytime solar than a household that uses most of its energy during daylight hours.

The Australian Government also cautions that the financial savings from a battery may not always be enough to recover the upfront cost within the battery's warranty period.

So the right question isn't simply “Do I need a battery?”

It's: “How much more value could I get from the solar I already have by storing some of it?”

There’s never been a better time to investigate

The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program, introduced on 1 July 2025, provides around a 30% discount on eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar. The program is currently available across Australia, subject to eligibility requirements.

The program has already accelerated battery adoption, with more than 160,000 battery installations supported in its first six months.

For homeowners who have already made the decision to invest in solar, a battery is the opportunity to take the next step: use more of the energy you generate, buy less from the grid and have stored energy available when you need it.

Your solar panels produce the energy.

Your battery gives you more control over when you use it.

And as feed-in tariffs remain well below typical grid electricity prices, that ability to store and use your own solar is becoming increasingly valuable.

I’ve deliberately kept the tone practical rather than “hard sell”, because sceptical existing-solar owners are more likely to respond to the economics and functionality than generic claims about batteries. The key message is essentially: your solar investment is already working, a battery can help you get more out of it.
